Solar PV installation

The panels generate DC electricity whenever there is daylight. An inverter converts it to the AC your home runs on and feeds it into your consumer unit, so your lights, sockets and appliances draw from the roof first and the grid second. Whatever you do not use is exported — unless it is stored or diverted, which is where a well-designed system earns more of its keep. A grid-connected system also has to be notified to your electricity network operator, which is handled as part of a compliant installation.

Most homes use the least electricity while the roof is generating the most. A battery changes that equation: surplus generation charges the battery through the day, and the house draws it back in the evening instead of buying from the grid. You use more of what your own roof produces, exports stop being the default, and on time-of-use tariffs the battery can also charge when electricity is cheapest. Solar pairs well with the rest of the property’s electrics. A solar power diverter turns surplus generation into hot water, sending it to your immersion heater instead of the grid — solar-controlled water heating from energy you would otherwise export. An EV charger can be set to charge from surplus solar. And heat pump supplies planned alongside the array make the most of the distribution design.
